Protest

Martin Luther portrait of circa 1532 in the Metropolitan Museum of Art by Lucas Cranach der Ältere (the Elder) (c. 1472–1553)

Our sins honor Christ, Marty and Grigory tell us all, Grigory Rasputin that is, or the « Khlysty ». Forget firm purpose of amendment, just boast brazenly of your sins. Endeavor to multiply them. Cut out a few books of the Bible while you're at it. Try to remove others (like the Book of James). Hey come on, we have to do our part to make Christ's mercy shine forth, so sin boldly!

And this crap has snared billions of souls. And really folks, you draw no conclusions from the circumstances that Anne Boleyn and her chaplain, Thomas Cranmer, and their King Henry VIII made all this global?

Unbelievable!

"Be a sinner and sin boldly."
If you are a preacher of mercy, do not preach an imaginary but the true mercy. If the mercy is true, you must therefore bear the true, not an imaginary sin. God does not save those who are only imaginary sinners. Be a sinner, and let your sins be strong [often rather translated: "Be a sinner and sin boldly."], but let your trust in Christ be stronger, and rejoice in Christ who is the victor over sin, death, and the world. We will commit sins while we are here, for this life is not a place where justice resides. We, however, says Peter (2. Peter 3:13) are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth where justice will reign. It suffices that through God's glory we have recognized the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world. No sin can separate us from Him, even if we were to kill or commit adultery thousands of times each day. Do you think such an exalted Lamb paid merely a small price with a meager sacrifice for our sins? Pray hard for you are quite a sinner.

In 2016, circa 30,000 to 40,000 "denominations" ... and counting. Each posits different doctrine, a differing content of the faith, each calling it Christianity.

And great news this is for the Muslims and for the atheist and Talmudic Jews, but also for the Plutocrats. When it comes to self proclaimed "Christian" sects, the more the merrier for the just mentioned. More conflicts and infighting can be stirred up. All of them become more futile and inept, and even comical, like spraying soma gas on the Gamma Minuses, having them slip off into a mental Soma Holiday, crying and blubbering.

Yet this is not expecially new.

Consider, already by the end of the 16th century in which Martin Luther (b. Germany), John Calvin (b. France), Huldrych Zwingli (b. Switzerland), John Knox (b. Scotland) and Thomas Cranmer (b. England) worked their wonders, the number of bickering, often enough warring, denominations was up to more than 300.

Perhaps more than any page on this website, this page, this attempt to make a short story from the content of a library five hundred years in the making, is in its earliest draft stages.

And yet perhaps even now, some readers will discern the vital distinction between, on the one side

The Holy Reunification into the Orthodox-Catholic Church of the Ancient Churches — Catholic, Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox — established by Christ Jesus, through His chosen Apostles and their nearest associates, maintaining the Sacraments and Apostolic Succession and Orthodoxy.

and on the other side

Syncretism, Indifferentism and False Ecumenism (or False Irenicism / Eirenism)

The goal of United European Christendom — Heal the Schism Now — is first and foremost the healing of the Schism within the Orthodox–Catholic Church Militant, the strengthening of orthodoxy and of the Church.

The Return of the Prodigal Son by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn

There was a man who had two sons; and the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that falls to me.’ And he divided his living between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living. And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want. So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have fed on the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants.”’ And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet; and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry; for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to make merry.

Now his elder son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants and asked what this meant. And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.’ But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, but he answered his father, ‘Lo, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the fatted calf!’ And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’”

  Many will fall away ...
But he who endures to the end
will be saved.
Then they will deliver you up to tribulation, and put you to death; and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. And then many will fall away, and betray one another, and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because wickedness is multiplied, most men's love will grow cold. But he who endures to the end will be saved.

...... Once Saved Always Saved ......

A person declares his or her self to be saved — or makes such a declaration about another — purporting to remove the power from Christ to judge the eternal destination of a soul, while also moving the time of such ultimate decision from the death of the person to point in time when the human speaker choses to make such a declaration!

But even for Calvin, one could push things too far, make the Judaizing too obvious, and in so doing endanger Calvin's own position. Such was the fate of Michel Servet. A Spanish physician who had real accomplishments — he was the first to describe pulmonary circulation — his published views in Christianismi Restitutio – the Restoration of Christianity (heretics invariably boast that, the gates of Hell having indeed prevailed against the Church for so very long, they will now set things straight), rejecting the most holy Trinity, got him into trouble with his fellow judaizing heretic, John Calvin. Servet also felt himself free to rejected infant baptism.

John Calvin was the author of Servet's execution by burning at the stake, "for the glory of god," though the actually sentence was passed down by a council of 25.

Actually, it is an obvious piece of hypocritical non-apology by early XX century Calvinist apologists on behalf of their "NOTRE GRAND REFORMATEUR"

Epilogue: A few months after I took these photos in 2011, a monument more sympathetic to Servet and his sufferings was unveiled in Geneva, a copy of the Clotilde Roch scuplture which had been reject 100 years earlier by the Geneva authorities on the grounds that Servet already had his monolith. In attendance at the ceremony were always grovelling (except before faithful Orthodox-Catholic Christians) representatives of the Spirit-of-Vatican-II Roman Catholic Church, but conspicously absent were representatives of the Calvinist "church," the same-sex-celebratin' Église protestante de Genève – Protestant Church of Geneva.

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all lowliness and meekness, with patience, forbearing one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all, who is above all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it is said, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.” (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ; so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the cunning of men, by their craftiness in deceitful wiles. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every joint with which it is supplied, when each part is working properly, makes bodily growth and upbuilds itself in love.
Saint Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 4:1-16 [emphasis added]

"You tell me what a great fuss the Papists are making because the word 'Alone' is not in the text of Paul. If your Papist makes such and unnecessaary row about the word 'Alone', say right out to him: 'Dr. Martin Luther will have it so.' And say: 'Papists and asses are one and the same thing.' I will have it so, and I order it to be so, and my will is reason enouch. I know very well that the word 'Alone' is not in the Latin or the Greek text, it was not necessary for the Papists to teach me that. It is true, those letters are not in it, which makes the jackasses look at, and the cow stares at a new gate ... It ['alone'] shall remain in my New Testament, and if all the Popish donkeys were to get mad and beside themselves, they will not get it out."

Arch-Prideful Martin Luther also felt himself free to delete parts of books from the Canon of the Bible:

Esther
Daniel

and even entire books:

Tobit
Judith
I Maccabees
II Maccabees
Wisdom
Sirach
Baruch

from his Old Testament.

Portrait of Edward VI as a Child, painting c. 1538, by Hans Holbein the Younger (1497 – 1543).
And what a great arrangement – unquestionably god ordained – that this
spoiled little boy would be the arbiter of the the content of the Christian faith,
that he is divinely ordained to define what is dogma, what error!
At Edward's coronation Cranmer again confirmed Edward's Royal Supremacy,
that this boy was the Supreme Head of the Church of England:

"Albeit the king's Majesty justly and rightfully is and ought to be the supreme head of the Church of England, and so is recognized by the clergy of this realm in their convocations, yet nevertheless, for corroboration and confirmation thereof, and for increase of virtue in Christ's religion within this realm of England, and to repress and extirpate all errors, heresies, and other enormities and abuses heretofore used in the same, be it enacted, by authority of this present Parliament, that the king, our sovereign lord, his heirs and successors, kings of this realm, shall be taken, accepted, and reputed the only supreme head in earth of the Church of England, called Anglicans Ecclesia; and shall have and enjoy, annexed and united to the imperial crown of this realm, as well the title and style thereof, as all honors, dignities, preeminences, jurisdictions, privileges, authorities, immunities, profits, and commodities to the said dignity of the supreme head of the same Church belonging and appertaining; and that our said sovereign lord, his heirs and successors, kings of this realm, shall have full power and authority from time to time to visit, repress, redress, record, order, correct, restrain, and amend all such errors, heresies, abuses, offenses, contempts and enormities, whatsoever they be, which by any manner of spiritual authority or jurisdiction ought or may lawfully be reformed, repressed, ordered, redressed, corrected, restrained, or amended, most to the pleasure of Almighty God, the increase of virtue in Christ's religion, and for the conservation of the peace, unity, and tranquility of this realm; any usage, foreign land, foreign authority, prescription, or any other thing or things to the contrary hereof notwithstanding."

Monument by Antonio Canova to the Royal Stuarts in Saint Peter's Basilica commemorating the last three members of the Royal House of Stuart: James Francis Edward Stuart, his elder son Charles Edward Stuart, and his younger son, Henry Benedict Stuart, Cardinal of the Catholic Church and Dean of the College of Cardinals. The Jacobites recognised these three princes as kings of England, Scotland and Ireland.
Detail from the monument by Antonio Canova to the Royal Stuarts in Saint Peter's Basilica commemorating the last three members of the Royal House of Stuart: James Francis Edward Stuart, his elder son Charles Edward Stuart, and his younger son, Henry Benedict Stuart. The Jacobites, true to The Church, wanted first to restore to the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland to King James (II of England and VII of Scotland), who had been deposed in the absurdly named "Glorious Revolution" of 1688 in favour of his own Protestant Daughter Mary (II) and her husband and his son-in-law and nephew, William of Orange (r. 1689-1702). Such hopes continued during the life of the son of James II, James Francis Edward Stuart (10 June 1688 – 1 January 1766), who was thus the pretender from his father's death in 1701 until his own death in 1766, recognized as James the III by the Catholics of England, Ireland and the rest of Europe, including Louis XIV of France. Indeed these hopes for restored Christian orthodoxy and unity in the British Ilse attaching to the Stuarts continued in the son of James "III", Charles Edward Stuart, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie (31 December 1720 – 31 January 1788), and so the second Catholic Jacobite Stuart pretender, and thus Charles "III", whose life extended to 100 years after the not-at-all Glorious Revolution. The final Stuart, James "III's" younger son and Charles "III's" younger brother lived until 1807, but this final Stuart made no attempt to regain the lost thrones, and indeed he rose to the second highest office in the Catholic Church, Dean of the College of Cardinals.

This monument much impressed Hilaire Belloc (Member of Parliament, 1906-1910) when he walked from his then home in central France, across the Alps to Rome and to this Basilica in 1902.

It is not generally appreciated how the success of Luther's religious revolution against Catholicism in Germany was due to the way in which Mohammedan pressure from the East was paralysing the central authority of the German Emperors. They had to compromise with the leaders of the religious revolution and try to patch up a sort of awkward peace between the irreconcilable claims of Catholic authority and Protestant religious theory in order to meet the enemy at their gates; the enemy which had already overthrown Hungary and might well overthrow all of Southern Germany and perhaps reach the Rhine. If Islam had succeeded in doing this during the chaos of violent civil dissension among the Germans, due to the launching of the Reformation, our civilization would have been as effectively destroyed as it would have been if the first rush of the Mohammedans through Spain had not been checked and beaten back eight centuries earlier in the middle of France.
Hilaire Belloc in The Great Heresies (1938)

Heresy is the dislocation of some complete and self-supporting scheme by the introduction of a novel denial of some essential part therein. We mean by "a complete and self-supporting scheme" any system of affirmation in physics or mathematics or philosophy or what-not, the various parts of which are coherent and sustain each other.

...

Heresy means, then, the warping of a system by "Exception": by "Picking out" one part of the structure[1] and implies that the scheme is marred by taking away one part of it, denying one part of it, and either leaving the void unfilled or filling it with some new affirmation. ... The denial of a scheme wholesale is not heresy, and has not the creative power of a heresy. It is of the essence of heresy that it leaves standing a great part of the structure it attacks. On this account it can appeal to believers and continues to affect their lives through deflecting them from their original characters. Wherefore, it is said of heresies that "they survive by the truths they retain."

...

For instance, [the Christian] religion has for one essential part (though it is only a part) the statement that the individual soul is immortal that personal conscience survives physical death. Now if people believe that, they look at the world and themselves in a certain way and go on in a certain way and are people of a certain sort. If they except, that is cut out, this one doctrine, they may continue to hold all the others, but the scheme is changed, the type of life and character and the rest become quite other. The man who is certain that he is going to die for good and for all may believe that Jesus of Nazareth was Very God of Very God, that God is Triune, that the Incarnation was accompanied by a Virgin Birth, that bread and wine are transformed by a particular formula; he may recite a great number of Christian prayers and admire and copy chosen Christian exemplars, but he will be quite a different man from the man who takes immortality for granted. ... Because heresy, in this particular sense (the denial of an accepted Christian doctrine) thus affects the individual, it affects all society, and when you are examining a society formed by a particular religion you necessarily concern yourself to the utmost with the warping or diminishing of that religion.

...

[H]eresy in its particular meaning (which is that of heresy in Christian doctrine) is of special interest for anyone who would understand Europe: the character of Europe and the story of Europe. For the whole of that story, since the appearance of the Christian religion, has been the story of struggle and change, mainly preceded by, often, if not always, caused by, and certainly accompanying, diversities of religious doctrine. In other words, "the Christian heresy" is a special subject of the very first importance to the comprehension of European history, because, in company with Christian orthodoxy, it is the constant accompaniment and agent of European life.

...

The study of successive Christian heresies, their characters and fates, has a special interest for all of us who belong to the European or Christian culture, and that is a reason that ought to be self-evident. Our culture was made by a religion. Changes in, or deflections from, that religion necessarily affect our civilization as a whole. ... The whole story of Europe, her various realms and states and general bodies during the last sixteen centuries has mainly turned upon the successive heresies arising in the Christian world.

"Our faith is then first and foremost in Christ, Who lives in His mystical body, the Church. It is only secondarily in the explicit beliefs. If our Blessed Lord did not reveal them, we would not believe them. If we lost Him, we would lose our beliefs. He comes first. Everything else is secondary. There is no doctrine, no moral, no dogma, no liturgy, no belief apart from Him. He is the object of faith, not a dogma. ... For a Catholic there is nothing credible within the Church apart from Christ who lives in it. Why if we did not believe that our Lord was God, if we said that He was only a good man, we would never believe in the Eucharist, or the Trinity. If we believed that our Lord was just simply a human being who perished in the dust, we would not believe in the forgiveness of sins. We know that our Lord once taught, governed and sanctified through a physical body which He took from His Mother, and now we know that He continues to teach and to govern and to sanctify in the mystical body which He took from the womb of humanity. His first body was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit. His mystical body was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. Therefore we accept every single Word of His, not just what His secretaries wrote. But we receive His Living Word, living through the centuries."

Sola Fide - Justification by faith alone
— a completely false, man-made, heretical doctrine, proved to be so through the following Scripture:

Not every one who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
  Matthew 7:21

And behold, one came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?” And he said to him, Why do you ask me about what is good? One there is who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.
  Matthew 19:16-17

He who believes in the Son has eternal life; he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God rests upon him.
  John 3:36

Truly, truly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself, and has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of man. Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come forth, those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.
  John 5:25-29

Truly, truly, I say to you, if any one keeps my word, he will never see death.
  John 8:51

For he will render to every man according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are factious and do not obey the truth, but obey wickedness, there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace for every one who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek.
  Romans 2:6-10
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
      Ephesians 2:8-9 [emphasis added]
For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.
  Romans 2:13

What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you yield yourselves to any one as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.
  Romans 6:15-18

If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit who dwells in you. So then, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— for if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of sonship. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
  Romans 8:11-17

[I]f you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For man believes with his heart and so is justified, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved. The scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and bestows his riches upon all who call upon him. For, “every one who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.”...... For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off.
  Romans 10:9-13; 11:21-22

Paul, called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and our brother Sosthenes, To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours [In 1 Corinthians 1:1-2, Apostle Saint Paul already makes clear that the entire epistle is addressed to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, that is, to believers on Jesus] ....... Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor sexual perverts ["ἀρσενοκοῖται" = "a male who lies with males."], nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
  1 Corinthians 1:1-2; 6:9-11

Now the works of the flesh are plain: immorality, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger, selfishness, dissension, party spirit, envy, [Other ancient authorities add murder] drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
  Galatians 5:19-25 [emphasis added]

But immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is fitting among saints. Let there be no filthiness, nor silly talk, nor levity, which are not fitting; but instead let there be thanksgiving. Be sure of this, that no immoral or impure man, or one who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for it is because of these things that the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not associate with them, for once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.
  Ephesians 5:3-11 [emphasis added]

And he who sat upon the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” Also he said, “Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6 And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water without price from the fountain of the water of life. 7 He who conquers shall have this heritage, and I will be his God and he shall be my son. 8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, as for murderers, fornicators, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their lot shall be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
  Revelation 21:5-8

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well," but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead. Indeed someone might say, "You have faith and I have works." Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works. You believe that God is one. You do well. Even the demons believe that and tremble. Do you want proof, you ignoramus, that faith without works is useless? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by the works. Thus the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called "the friend of God." See how a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. And in the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she welcomed the messengers and sent them out by a different route? For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
  James 2:14-26

That no one is Justified by the Ceremonial Laws and Rituals of the Old Testament,
Repeatedly referred to by means of the synecdoche, "Circumcision,"
Yes, that is true.

But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from law, although the law and the prophets bear witness to it, 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction; 23 since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 they are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as an expiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins; 26 it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies him who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On the principle of works? No, but on the principle of faith. 28 For we hold that a man is justified by faith apart from works of law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since God is one; and he will justify the circumcised on the ground of their faith and the uncircumcised through their faith. 31 Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.

  Romans 3:21-31 [emphasis added]

What then shall we say about Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.” Now to one who works, his wages are not reckoned as a gift but as his due. And to one who does not work but trusts him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned as righteousness. So also David pronounces a blessing upon the man to whom God reckons righteousness apart from works:

“Blessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered;
blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not reckon his sin.”

Is this blessing pronounced only upon the circumcised, or also upon the uncircumcised? We say that faith was reckoned to Abraham as righteousness. How then was it reckoned to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised. He received circumcision as a sign or seal of the righteousness which he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised and who thus have righteousness reckoned to them, and likewise the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but also follow the example of the faith which our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.
  Romans 4:1-12

But when Cephas came to Antioch I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. For before certain men came from James, [Apostle Saint Peter] ate with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party. And with him the rest of the Jews acted insincerely, so that even Barnabas was carried away by their insincerity. But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?” We ourselves, who are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners, yet who know that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified.
  Galatians 2:11-16 [emphasis added]

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand fast therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. Now I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. I testify again to every man who receives circumcision that he is bound to keep the whole law. You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. For through the Spirit, by faith, we wait for the hope of righteousness.
  Galatians 5:1-6

Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is not irksome to me, and is safe for you. Look out for the dogs, look out for the evil-workers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. For we are the true circumcision, who worship God in spirit, and glory in Christ Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh. Though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If any other man thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born of Hebrews; as to the law a Pharisee, as to zeal a persecutor of the church, as to righteousness under the law blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own, based on law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith; that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that if possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

Sola Scriptura - A central Protestant invention, ironically itself not in Scripture.

[Please forgive the present writer, Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ. Though the truth is that there is a strong desire accompanying the present effort to not pursue the tactic of partial truth telling, however advantageous such might seem for scoring points in single disputes. Combined with this is the strong conviction that almost all Christian writers are falling into just such a deceptive trap, however unwittingly. In an effort here to make good this boast, let a point be made and made with emphasis, which point runs counter to the main thrust of our argument. Please forgive again, but do not count on many Orthodox or Catholic writers showing a willingness to do this.

Throughout Europe, prior to the Revolution of Luther and Calvin and Cranmer and Knox, the Holy Scriptures were unavailable to the vast and overwhelming majority of baptized Christians. With the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century came a seismic shift. Thoughout Europe huge intellectual resources were applied to creating complete translations of the Old and New Testaments into the given vernacular of a country, of nearly all countries. Perhaps it will take some effort for 21st century man to imagine this. The Holy Bible is instantly available to all of us, and we do not actually read it. Throughout the first three-quarters of the time period between Christ's earthly ministry and this present writing, that is for 1500 years, only the tiniest minority of people had access to the Scriptures in any language which they could understand. Obviously there was also the question of the Bible and all other books being prohibitively expensive before Johannes Gutenberg's wonderful invention of movable type in the 1450s, but beyond this there was simple nothing to print. Yes, in Syriac and Biblical Greek and Latin, as also much later in Old Church Slavonic, there were Bible translations many centuries earlier. ]

And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.
— 1 Thessalonians 2:13 —
So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter.
— 2 Thessalonians 2:15 —
And when a great crowd came together and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable: A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold. As he said this, he called out, He who has ears to hear, let him hear. And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience.
— Luke 8:4-15 —
I do not pray for these only, but also for those who believe in me through their word.
— John 17:20 —

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name. — John 20:30-31 —
But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.
— John 21:30-31 —
[B]ecause of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and growing—so among yourselves, from the day you heard and understood the grace of God in truth,
— Colossians 1:5-6 —

But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
— 1 Timothy 3:15 —

You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
— 2 Timothy 2:1-2 —

  The Eucharist
And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
Luke 22:19-20

So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:53-54

The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.
1 Corinthians 10:16-17

"Full of grace" used only twice in the New Testament, with Jesus and with Mary:
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we saw his glory, the glory as it were of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John 1:14

And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
Luke 1:28

  Leaving the Church
("went out from us" not "went out from the Bible")

Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that the antichrist was coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. Thus we know this is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not really of our number; if they had been, they would have remained with us. Their desertion shows that none of them was of our number.

Perhaps the strongest case of all is this: that only one great English poet went mad, Cowper. And he was definitely driven mad by logic, by the ugly and alien logic of predestination. Poetry was not the disease, but the medicine; poetry partly kept him in health. He could sometimes forget the red and thirsty hell to which his hideous necessitarianism dragged him among the wide waters and the white flat lilies of the Ouse. He was damned by John Calvin; he was almost saved by John Gilpin. - GKC, Orthodoxy -

And actually, the necessary rejection of Calvinist understanding of Predestination also carries with it by unavoidable necessity the final rejection of Sola Scriptura. We need God's gift of the Church - one, holy, catholic and apostolic, the Orthodox-Catholic Church.

A question for XXI century Evangelicals:

Have you ever found anything in the writings of Luther or of Calvin which suggests that the Christian life begins, not with baptism, but with an emotionally-hyped born again conversion experience?

  grave of Calvin in Geneva
John Calvin did not believe in Sola Scriptura. Calvin believed in Scripture + Calvin, in his own divine calling to interpret Scripture. Essentially Calvin felt free to reject 1500 years of "Big T" Church Tradition in favor, not of private interpretation of Scripture, but rather in favor of his own authority to interpret Scripture. See Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion. And Calvin, in very sharp distinction to Luther, was a Judaizer.

"The strength of Calvinism was the truth on which it insisted, the Omnipotence of God, the dependence and insufficiency of man; but its error, which was the negation of free-will, also killed it. For men could not permanently accept so monstrous a denial of common sense and common experience." Hilaire Belloc, The Great Heresies (1936)

Dear Friends,

Do any of you know where the present writer should begin a discussion of the impact of the Protestand Reformation on Christian unity and the integrity of the Church? I do not. And perhaps I need not. This is not part of the film. And what can be added? A recitation of the fact that there have been women and men of good will and great intellect, as also their wanton and self-seeking co-religionists, on both sides, is this useful? (Let me postpone what I mean by "both sides", as there obviously is not and never was one Protestant faith. The movement started to sub-divide from the earliest years, and as of this writing there are countless separated denominations.) Or should one try one's hand at a capsule summary of relationships among European princes in the 16th Century (or from the 15th Century, if we are to consider the movement of Jan Hus)? Shall I cite as though it were a credential the facts that I was baptized as an infant into the Methodist Church and that all the relations I know of who claim to be Christians at all are Protestants? Or shall I speak of my own intense respect for the enthusiasm and Christian witness of the Baptists? Or maybe some perfunctory acknowledgement of the disciplinary distortions and corruptions within the Catholic Church at the time that Martin Luther and John Calvin were writing and working, as also in our own day, would add something?

Or on the other hand, should I ask of Protestants, if they object to the idea of one bishop being empowered to define doctrine for the whole Church, do they object any less to having one layman so empowered over the people in the (vast) territories he controlled, as per cuius regio, eius religio (whose the region, his the religion)? How about having a boy of nine decide which changes to the established Church doctrine and practice of centuries will be imposed on the people, as could Edward VI, who ascended to the thrones of England and Ireland on the death of his father, Henry VIII in 1547 (H.M. Edward was 15 when he died in 1553)?

And to those few (in percentage terms) Protestants who have made the search and study, may one ask, if you find yourselves saying of those Catholic priests whom you have encountered, "seventy percent of these guys are homosexual," or if you find yourself saying of those Orthodox priests whom you have encountered, "eighty percent of these guys are infected with the heresy of ignorant nationalism," what do you plan on doing about these things? Abandon God's Church to these guys and follow some television charlatan who presumes to the authority to making up Christian doctrine — the content of the faith — based on his personal interpretation of Biblical passages?

... Catholic-Lutheran-Methodist Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification with Annex . [SERIOUS PROBLEMS]

... Thomas Cranmer.

At all events, one figure surely can not be absent from any such remarks, the figure of thirty thousand: 30,000 "Denominations" world-wide and counting, within each the belief that the Bible can be read and each individual, the greatly learned and the exceptionally dull alike, can then define for himself the content of the faith, what Christianity is. The predictable and predicted result of course has been sola scriptura without the Scripture. Thirty thousand, and each year counting.

Thanks Marty!

[insert picture of Belloc]

There was present in the field against the Church a powerful ally for the Reformers: and that ally was the body of immoral rich who hoped to profit by a general break in the popular organization of society. The atheism and the wealth, the luxury and the sensuality, the scholarship and aloofness of the Renaissance answered, over the heads of the Catholic populace, the call of barbarism. The Iconoclasts of greed joined hands with the Iconoclasts of blindness and rage and with the Iconoclasts of academic pride.

Nevertheless, even with such allies, barbarism would have failed, the Reformation would today be but an historical episode without fruit, Europe would still be Christendom, had not there been added the decisive factor of all--which was the separation of Britain.
-Joseph Hilaire Pierre René Belloc in Europe and the Faith-

The Alternative: Obviously, return to the Orthodox-Catholic Church

Pious and thoughful Christians are leaving the Anglican Communion, the Church of England, in droves, as so many of their most impressive countrymen have rejected or left the CofE in centuries and generations gone by, from William Shakespeare in the 16th Century to J.R.R. Tolkien, G.K. Chesterton and Blessed John Henry Newman in the 19th and 20th. (Had he lived to see the developments (regressions and degenerations) of the past half-century, which person of learning and familiar with the man doubts that C.S.Lewis would also have sought entry into Communion with the Orthodox or Catholics long ago? He certainly would not have allowed himself to wallow in their mess.) In Anglicanorum Coetibus the Catholic Church has very recently established a path for individuals and parishes in the Anglican tradition to enter into the Catholic Church while still retaining the cultural and spiritual richness of old Anglicanism. Very soon the Anglican Catholic Church of Canada will enter into corporate Full Communion with the Catholic Church using these procedures. Let us all pray that all those people within the Anglican communion who are Christians will very soon enter one of the Orthodox Churches or the Catholic Church, and of course that these become one as soon as possible.

... then let it -- the Church of England -- become exclusively what it is now largely, a schismatic, heretical body governed by women and male homosexuals.

Urge her most gracious Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II to return herself and on behalf of her realm to the Catholic Church as it reunites with the Orthodox Church into the Orthodox-Catholic Church, one, holy and apostolic. Then we can prayerfully look forward to the day when future generations will direct their supplications to the intercession of Queen Saint Elizabeth, the greatest British Monarch of all time. Can we be allowed to hope, can we be forgiven for dreaming that Queen Elizabeth is made of the stuff that would make this kind of heroic virtue possible, that she might reverse the permenant schism which her eponymous predecessor, Elizabeth I, did so much to ossify and entrench?

Now I say plainly, I will never defend or screen any one from your just rebuke, who, through false devotion to Mary forgets Jesus. But I should like the fact to be proved first; I cannot hastily admit it. there is this broad fact the other way; — that, if we look through Europe, we shall find, on the whole, that just those nations and countries have lost their faith in the divinity of Christ, who have given up devotion to His Mother, and that those on the other hand, who had been foremost in her honour, have retained their orthodoxy.

The Protestants will simply have to be convinced to return to the Orthodox-Catholic Church, when once there is an Orthodox-Catholic Church to return to.
